Winterfest celebrations kicked off this afternoon with an assembly, and Carson High School was pleased to announce the student-elected candidates and theme and fundraising beneficiary: “Senators Got Game” and Special Olympics, respectively.
The week-long events, beginning Monday, Jan. 29 through Saturday, Feb. 3, will feature day and evening activities the whole school may enjoy including dress-up days, movie nights, games, the Future Business Leaders of America talent show (Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Community Center), Loteria Game Night and taco food trucks (Thursday, 6-8 p.m.), and more.
The Carson High School 2024 Winterfest Candidates, alphabetically by grade and last name, include the following. Senior King Candidates: Eric Billings, Dylan Cooley, Anton Torres Cruz, Zack Lopez, AJ Marhevka and Zach Nichols. Senior Queen Candidates: Brooklynn Grundy, Dayna Myrehn, Riley Pulver, Danica Studley, Reagan Talkington and Dani Varin. Junior Prince Candidates: Miles Haney, Alex Miner and Kekoa Mitchell. Junior Princess Candidates: Addy Morgan, Kiani Rizo and Wabby Ronk. Sophomore Prince Candidates: Matt Kruse, Alex Martinez and Nathan Torres. Sophomore Princess Candidates: Osiris Estrada Ledesma, Norah Schultz and Amesty Spraggins. Freshman Prince Candidates: Cruz Gonzales, Jackson Hendee and Ivan Romeo. Freshman Princess Candidates: Maria Pimentel Avelar, Jordan Brubaker and Riley Kuhlman.
In addition to the announcement of Winterfest Candidates, the Carson High Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps presented the colors while choir singers performed the national anthem. The assembly also featured performances by the Carson High Cheer Team, CHS Blue Thunder Bands and Youth Theatre Carson City’s Showstoppers. Social Studies Teacher Ben Spence and Dean Matt Morgan also duked it out as inflatable sumo wrestlers. Lastly, there were friendly competitions among grade levels (upper and underclassmen) including oversized ring tosses and loudest section cheers.
To cap off the assembly, Mayor Lori Bagwell launched the “Mayor’s Attendance Hall of Fame” campaign by awarding AirPods and cash credit cards to Carson High students with perfect attendance, improved attendance and consistent attendance. The “Every Day Counts” slogan for the campaign celebrates students’ commitment to education and reminds them of the importance of attending school every day. Students in the assembly learned how being present at school impacts more than just grades. School attendance not only influences academic performance, but it also improves social skills, confidence and long-term success.
The underclassmen crowning event will be held Friday, Feb. 2, at 6 p.m. at the Galaxy Movie Theater. The senior coronation event will be held at the Winterfest Dance Saturday, Feb. 3, in Senator Square at approximately 8:45 p.m.
