For the fourth year in a row, Carson City School District’s high school students graduated at the highest rate ever at 86.79 percent for the Class of 2019, an increase of 6.48 percentage points since 2016 where it averaged 80.31 percent.

Carson High School achieved a graduation rate of 95.90 percent, up 7.80 percentage points since 2016 when it averaged 88.10 percent. Pioneer High School, the alternative high school in Carson City, achieved a graduation rate of 82.35 percent, up 10.35 percentage points since 2016 when it averaged 72.00 percent.

“These are very impressive numbers to look at when you consider all the effort that already goes into ensuring our students succeed academically,” said Carson City School District Superintendent Richard Stokes. “It is extremely difficult to gain even a half of a graduation rate percentage point from year to year. The continued uptick in the numbers speaks to the ongoing effort and success of students, families, community partners and every employee within the district. This is a combined effort that should be celebrated among all of our partners and staff.”

Some of the effort and success is also attributed to effective office administrators who help track down students who may have registered for school, and may only attend for a short period of time before moving out of town to a new school, he continued. Probably the hardest hitting factor in graduation rates are those students who do not attend school, but we cannot document where they ended up, which is often another school. Some of the office staff members often become private investigators tracking down missing students.
